Pearl Valley/Muthyala Maduvu(01-May-24)
After learning about all the hype surrounding the Crested Tree Swift in Pearl Valley decided to visit this place after a Gap of 10 years. Last time when I visited this place it was quite raw the steps were all just flat stones. But now the things have changed it’s more polished in the sense there are proper steps, railings and a couple of viewpoints. Perhaps what has not changed is the water falls itself, it’s the same thin waterfalls.
After descending the steps and seeing the pearls of water, we treaded along the rocks and stream. It was still early around 6:45AM. It was a typical cool summer morning. With a cool breeze carrying the smell of the forest it brought us freshness and energy to trek along.
As we moved, I was told that people had sometimes spotted Indian Gaur and elephants. We did see some fresh dung of elephants. With little fear and curiosity, we moved along.
Finally, we reached a spot where crested tree swift had nested. But for our surprise couple of trees had fallen because of overnight storm. We saw an adult tree swift siting high up the dead tree.
We wondered if the tree with the nest had collapsed all sort of theories started to run in our heads. After few minutes of careful scans, we finally spotted the chick.
A Parent approaching the chick
It camouflaged so well with the branches it was difficult to spot. After seeing this we moved on as someone said there is another pair further ahead.
On the way we saw Stork billed Kingfisher which is difficult to spot in open.
Once we reached a sport there were 2 families of Crested tree swifts
We also spotted a pygmy woodpecker
By now Sun started to peak and some raptors started their routine.
Once the sun became unbearable, we decided to call it a day and return. It was tough task to climb up the stairs with sun blazing.
Travel Info
Overall, the route to this place is ok. Parking is available inside, but gates were closed when we went so had to park outside. There are restrooms at Mayura.
